●      Sunday, March 27, 10:15 a.m., A Mostly Music Service, saxophonist/writer Richard Terrill and pianist/composer Larry McDonough, performing remotely at Pilgrim House Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1212 W. Highway 96, Arden Hills, MN 55112.
http://www.pilgrimhouseuua.org/

Much as Unitarian Universalists credit a wide range of sources for their spirituality, creative artists build on those who have come before. In this program, pianist Larry McDonough (composition, arranging) and saxophonist Richard Terrill (poetry) describe and illustrate their process of building on material from various sources for use in their own creative work, drawing parallels to spiritual pursuits.

The Larry McDonough Trio will perform its new CD, Kind of Bill on the Palace Grounds, Marking 40 Years since the Death of Bill Evans, and more!
http://larrymcdonoughjazz.homestead.com/KindofBillonthePalaceGrounds-CD.html

They also will premier a new jazz trio arrangement of the Ukraine National Anthem. Bill Evans was of Carpatho-Rusyn ancestry. He refused a lucrative tour of the Soviet Union to protest the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in 1980.

As Volstead's Emporium is a classic speakeasy in the style of Prohibition, it is a little difficult to find. The entrance is off of an alley behind the storefront. You can park on Lake Street or Lyndale Avenue or the parking lot off of Lyndale Avenue behind the venue halfway between Lake Street and 31st Street. Walk on the alley just west of the storefront or the parking lot and go south from Lake Street or north from the parking lot, turn east on the cross alley with parking and then north to the back of the building to a metal door with a slot for staff to talk to the entrant. Here is a link to a map with the walking path.

Larry McDonough saw Bill Evans perform in the 1970s, and Joel Shapira met Jim Hall when he lived in New York City. They will perform music from their new live recording celebrating the music of pianist Bill Evans and guitarist Jim Hall. “Intermodulating Undercurrents Live at the Kos: The Music of Bill Evans and Jim Hall” was recorded at a show during the pandemic to an outside social distance audience on October 3, 2021, on the patio of the Kos in Minneapolis, hosted by owners Kathy Kosnoff and Lyonel Norris.
http://larrymcdonoughjazz.homestead.com/IntermodulatingUndercurrentsLiveatTheKos.html

Included will be pieces from the classic Evans and Hall recordings “Undercurrent” and “Intermodulation” along with pieces that Evans and Hall performed separately that they might have included in another recording had Bill Evans lived longer, and pieces written by Larry and Joel in the spirit of Evans and Hall. Intermodulating Undercurrents has filled venues throughout the Twin Cities. Come and see why. Hear the magic Bill Evans and Jim Hall made and what might have been.

A music stand pole will serve as the Festivus Pole. Audience members will be invited to submit "Airing of Grievances" cards about friends and family to be read from the stage during the break after the first set. Come ready to listen and rant.
