As Volstead's Emporium is a classic speakeasy in the style of Prohibition, it is a little difficult to find. The entrance is off of an alley behind the storefront. You can park on Lake Street or Lyndale Avenue or the parking lot off of Lyndale Avenue behind the venue halfway between Lake Street and 31st Street. Walk on the alley just west of the storefront or the parking lot and go south from Lake Street or north from the parking lot, turn east on the cross alley with parking and then north to the back of the building to a metal door with a slot for staff to talk to the entrant. Larry McDonough saw Bill Evans perform in the 1970s, and Joel Shapira met Jim Hall when he lived in New York City. They will perform music from their new live recording celebrating the music of pianist Bill Evans and guitarist Jim Hall. “Intermodulating Undercurrents Live at the Kos: The Music of Bill Evans and Jim Hall” was recorded at a show during the pandemic to an outside social distance audience on October 3, 2021, on the patio of the Kos in Minneapolis, hosted by owners Kathy Kosnoff and Lyonel Norris.
Included will be pieces from the classic Evans and Hall recordings “Undercurrent” and “Intermodulation” along with pieces that Evans and Hall performed separately that they might have included in another recording had Bill Evans lived longer, and pieces written by Larry and Joel in the spirit of Evans and Hall. LMQ will perform music for Seinfeld’s fictional December holiday “Festivus for the Rest of Us” that involves Airing of Grievances, Feats of Strength, and the labeling of easily explainable events as Festivus Miracles, along with odd takes on holiday tunes from the CD Angels, Kings, My Favorite Things and jazz based on rock classics from their recent CD Alice in Stonehenge and other AcoustElectric Adventures. A music stand pole will serve as the Festivus Pole. Audience members will be invited to submit "Airing of Grievances" cards about friends and family to be read from the stage during the break after the first set. Come ready to listen and rant.
