“Sources”
Much as UUs credit a wide range of sources for their spirituality, creative artists “borrow” from those who have come before. In today’s service, pianist Larry McDonough (composition, arranging) and saxophonist Richard Terrill (poetry) will describe and illustrate their process of borrowing material from other sources for use in their own creative work, and attempt to link that process with spiritual concerns.

Larry McDonough saw Evans perform in the 1970s, and Joel Shapira met Hall when he lived in New York City. Larry and Joel will perform pieces from the classic Evans and Hall recordings “Undercurrent” and “Intermodulation” along with pieces that Evans and Hall performed separately that they might have included in another recording had Bill Evans lived longer. Intermodulating Undercurrents filled Black Dog in Saint Paul. Find out why.

Thursday, December 23, 7:00-9:00 p.m., “Festivus and Other Twisted Holidays” with the Larry McDonough Quartet (LMQ), Larry McDonough, piano and vocals, Richard Terrill, saxes and poetry, Greg Stinson, bass, Dean White, drums, and guest Carol Bergquist, flute and accordion, Black Dog Café, 308 Prince Street at the corner of Prince (4th Street) and Broadway, Lowertown, St. Paul. Do you need a break from the pandemic, politics, Zoom meetings, and maybe some family members? Are you tired of the same old holiday music?

LMQ will perform music for Seinfeld’s fictional December holiday “Festivus for the Rest of Us” that involves Airing of Grievances, Feats of Strength, and the labeling of easily explainable events as Festivus Miracles, along with odd takes on holiday tunes from the CD Angels, Kings, My Favorite Things and jazz based on rock classics from their recent CD Alice in Stonehenge and other AcoustElectric Adventures. A music stand pole will serve as the Festivus Pole. Audience members will be invited to submit "Airing of Grievances" cards about friends and family to be read from the stage during the break after the first set. Come ready to listen and rant.
