Come for the next show of the new Larry McDonough monthly Sunday classic jazz series. The Larry McDonough Quartet will perform the music of Wayne Shorter, who died on March 2 at the age of 89. He wrote memorable pieces, such as Footprints and Naima, and performed with Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Weather Report, Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, and others. The piece Wayne’s Thang was written by Kenny Garrett as a tribute to Shorter.

Friday, April 21, 6:00-7:45 p.m., Larry McDonough, piano, and Richard Terrill, saxes and poetry, perform “June 25, 1961 - Bill Evans at the Village Vanguard” at the 2023 Eau Claire Jazz Crawl at Valleybrook 410 Café, 410 South Barstow St., Eau Claire, WI 54701-3605.
They will celebrate the two live recordings of legendary pianist and composer Bill Evans, bassist and composer Scott Lafaro, and drummer Paul Motian on June 25, 1961 at the Village Vanguard. “Sunday at the Village Vanguard” and “Waltz for Debby” were the last recordings of this trio, as LaFaro died in a car accident just ten days after the live date at the Village Vanguard. The trio revolutionized jazz, with each member improvising at the same time while performing recognizable pieces.

Larry McDonough saw Bill Evans perform in the 1970s, and Joel Shapira met Jim Hall when he lived in New York City. They will perform music from their new live recording celebrating the music of pianist Bill Evans and guitarist Jim Hall. “Intermodulating Undercurrents Live at the Kos: The Music of Bill Evans and Jim Hall” was recorded at a show during the pandemic to an outside social distance audience on October 3, 2021, on the patio of the Kos in Minneapolis, hosted by owners Kathy Kosnoff and Lyonel Norris.

The Larry McDonough Quartet will perform the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim, Brazilian composer, pianist, guitarist, songwriter, arranger, and singer. Considered one of the great exponents of Brazilian music, Jobim internationalized bossa nova and, with the help of important American artists, merged it with jazz in the 1960s to create a new sound, with popular success. As a result, he is sometimes known as the "father of bossa nova". Come hear Garota de Ipanema (The Girl from Ipanema), Insensatez (How Insensitive), Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars), Orfeu da Conceição (Black Orpheus), Desafinado, Dindi, Wave, Chega de Saudade (No More Blues), and more, along with originals by Larry McDonough and Greg Stinson in the style of Jobim.

We will celebrate the birthday of Miles Davis, born on May 26, 1926, in Alton, Illinois. It is the 64th year since the release and performance of the legendary album Kind of Blue.
