Nova plays many original and commissioned pieces for jazz big band, with many done by band members and Minnesota composers. Nova will be premiering the Concerto for Big Band, written especially for Nova by noted composer and arranger, WA (Bill) Mathieu.  This concert will feature Mathieu’s six-movement jazz suite, as well as other Mathieu works, including music he wrote especially for the Stan Kenton and Duke Ellington Orchestras.  A $10 donation will be requested at the door to help fund upcoming Nova projects.  Bill broke into the music scene in 1958 when, as an 18-year-old phenom, he became staff arranger and trumpeter on the Kenton Orchestra.  Kenton’s 1959 album, Standards in Silhouette, showcases Mathieu’s rich melodic writing and sophisticated harmonies.  That album was critically acclaimed and remains one of the highlights of the Kenton Discography.  Bill then spent time writing for Duke Ellington, Maynard Ferguson and others.  In the mid-‘60s, Bill became the founding music director of the Second City Theatre in Chicago and its companion theatre in San Francisco.  Bill remains a renowned composer, compositional teacher and music author on the West Coast. Thanksgiving, Thu. Nov. 28, 7:00 am, not a music gig, but a volunteer opportunity if you are free in the morning on Thanksgiving Day is Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels.  I have been driving for them since 1980, and my kids have been helping for many years.  The headquarters are at Cretin Derham Hall, 550 South Albert Street, St. Paul, MN 55116.

The doors open at 6:00 am on Thanksgiving.  Drivers start arriving between 6:30 and 7:00.  They have donuts and juice.  You wait in a gym until around 8:00, when they starting handing out routes, so bring something to do (i.e. book, cards).   The sooner you get there, the farther up in line you are, and the sooner you get out.   However, arriving later and leaving later might not take any more time.  They might be full after 7:00.  You can choose a Minneapolis area or St. Paul area route.  Less people take the Minneapolis area routes, so you can go through a shorter line.  We always take Minneapolis.  We usually head out between 8:30 and 9:00 and are done by 10:00.  We then drop off a receipt form when done, go out for breakfast, and the rest of the day is ours.  If you have questions, you can contact me, or the boss: Bill Foussard, 651-699-5404 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4D0uCIt7-I
