Resistance
The sixth UU principal sets “the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.”  In this “mostly music” service, Larry McDonough and Richard Terrill offer contemporary poems and songs from the folk and jazz traditions that instruct and inspire in the pursuit of resistance to power.

Sunday, January 26, 7:00-9:00 p.m., with the Larry McDonough Quartet (LMQ), Larry McDonough, piano and vocals, Richard Terrill, saxes and poetry, Greg Stinson, bass, Dean White, drums, Black Dog Café, 308 Prince Street at the corner of Prince (4th Street) and Broadway,  Lowertown, St. Paul. Reserve your seats at (651) 228-9274. No cover but a $10 donation suggested. Come for the fourth show of the new Larry McDonough monthly Sunday Classic Jazz Series at Black Dog Café.

Bill Evans rarely performed with singers, so it was big news to some in the jazz community when Evans and Bennett recorded and released “The Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album” in 1975. The album included pieces each had done separately, such as Waltz for Debby (Evans) and The Touch of Your Lips (Bennett). In 1976 they recorded “Together Again” for release in 1977. Both albums showed Evans’ skill in accompanying a vocalist while adding the complexities that he displayed in his solo and ensemble performances, and exhibited Bennett’s expressive range from bold and commanding to soft and delicate.

Larry takes on the challenging roles of both Evans and Bennett to educate younger listeners about these great artists and to remind seasoned listeners of this pair who never recorded together again. Richard Terrill adds poetry about Bill Evans. In “You Must Believe in Spring,” you hear what Evans and Bennett did and what might have been.

Erin Livingston celebrates the two recordings of legendary pianist and composer Bill Evans and vocalist Tony Bennett. Bill Evans rarely performed with singers, so it was big news to some in the jazz community when Evans and Bennett recorded and released "The Tony Bennett Bill Evans Album" in 1975. In 1976 they recorded "Together Again" for release in 1977. Both albums showed Evans' skill in accompanying a vocalist while adding the complexities that he displayed in his solo and ensemble performances, and exhibited Bennett's expressive range from bold and commanding to soft and delicate.

Joining Erin are pianist and Bill Evans scholar Larry McDonough and bassist Tom Lewis. In the first set, they perform a sample of pieces from the two albums, each beginning with just voice and piano and bass joining through the piece. Selections will include The Touch of Your Lips, Some Other Time, My Foolish Heart, Waltz for Debby, Make Someone Happy, You Don't Know What Love Is, You're Nearer, and You Must Believe in Spring.

In the second set, they add pieces that Evans and Bennett recorded separately but never together. In "You Must Believe in Spring," you hear what Evans and Bennett did and what might have been.

As a percussionist and a composer, Paul Motian was a major force in the creative American music known as "jazz." For half a century, from 1954 to 2005, he worked with a wide range of innovators in rethinking the connections between rhythmic pulse and improvised melodies. His collaborations read like a who's who of the path-breaking improvisers, including Thelonius Monk, Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, Don Cherry, and Bill Frisell. Since his death in 2011, there has been a wave of posthumous releases of his work. Whether you are a devotee of Motian's work or just curious, join us as we bring a selection of his compositions to life.

The Don and Arvonne Fraser Human Rights Award will be presented to Lee Gelernt for his life-long work to protect human rights. Lee is the Deputy Director of the Immigrants’ Rights Project at the national office of the ACLU in New York. He is widely recognized as one of the leading public interest lawyers in the country, and has argued dozens of groundbreaking civil rights cases in the federal courts, including in the U.S. Supreme Court and almost every federal appeals court. Lee’s contributions as a leader and litigator have made a powerful difference in the lives of so many. We were privileged to witness one of those contributions firsthand when he argued on behalf of the 92 Somalis that ICE attempted to deport in December 2017, many of whom were eventually represented by The Advocates' network of pro bono lawyers.

Other award winners:
Special Recognition Award: Moscow Community Center for LGBT+ Initiatives

59 years and two days later, the Larry McDonough Quartet will celebrate the two live recordings of legendary pianist and composer Bill Evans, bassist and composer Scott Lafaro, and drummer Paul Motian on June 25, 1961 at the Village Vanguard. “Sunday at the Village Vanguard” and “Waltz for Debby” were the last recordings of this trio, as LaFaro died in a car accident just ten days after the live date at the Village Vanguard. The trio revolutionized jazz, with each member improvising at the same time while performing recognizable pieces.

Writing for Allmusic, music critic Thom Jurek wrote of the album: “This trio is still widely regarded as his finest, largely because of the symbiotic interplay between its members. This is a great place to begin with Evans.” Samuel Chell of All About Jazz wrote “Along with bassist wunderkind Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, Evans perfected his democratic vision of trio cooperation, where all members performed with perfect empathy and telepathy... It is these performances, currently available as Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby that comprise the number one best jazz live recording in this present series.” The album was included in Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Come see and hear the show that filled venues throughout the Twin Cities.

Larry McDonough saw Evans perform in the 1970s, and Joel Shapira met Hall when he lived in New York City. Larry and Joel will perform pieces from the classic Evans and Hall recordings “Undercurrent” and “Intermodulation” along with pieces that Evans and Hall performed separately that they might have included in another recording had Bill Evans lived longer. Intermodulating Undercurrents filled Black Dog in Saint Paul. Find out why.

Release

The Larry McDonough Quartet will celebrate the two live recordings of legendary pianist and composer Bill Evans, bassist and composer Scott Lafaro, and drummer Paul Motian on June 25, 1961 at the Village Vanguard.

Wednesday, December 23, 7:00 p.m., Streaming Festivus and Other Twisted Holidays, with the Larry McDonough Quartet (LMQ), Larry McDonough, piano and vocals, Richard Terrill, saxes and poetry, Greg Stinson, bass, Dean White, drums.

Do you need a break from the pandemic, politics, Zoom meetings, and maybe some family members? Are you tired of the same old holiday music?

Do not worry! On December 23, the Larry McDonough Quartet (LMQ) will stream a performance music in celebration of Seinfeld’s fictional December 23 holiday “Festivus for the Rest of Us” along with other odd takes on holiday music. See the online show that has filled Black Dog Café. Order takeout from Black Dog Café and then watch the show online. No cover but $10 donation to “The Human Fund” suggested (because musicians have to eat).

Some clips from the Seinfeld Festivus episode will set the scene. A headless music stand will serve as the Festivus Pole. Audience members will be invited to submit grievances about friends and family. Come ready to listen and rant.

Order takeout from Black Dog Café: Consider Festivus fare such as meatloaf on a bed of lettuce or a reasonable facsimile.
