Saturday, February 3, 8:00-9:30 p.m., the Debut of the Trios Trio, Jazz Central, 407 Central Avenue SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414. The Trios Trio is Larry McDonough, piano, Jim Bierma, bass, and Jimmy Olson, drums, playing the music of classic jazz trios like Bill Evans, Cedar Walton, Chick Corea, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner, Nat King Cole, Thelonious Monk, and others. Expect to hear what you have not heard! $15.

The band is called Trios Trio. The concert is called “Trio.” The 90 minute show will have three 30-minute segments, each curated by one of the band members. 

1. Bassist Jim Bierma: pieces by Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Haden, and Ornette Coleman.

2. Pianist Larry McDonough: pieces by Nat King Cole, Thelonious Monk, McCoy Tyner, Wyton Kelly, and Chick Corea.

3. Drummer Jimmy Olson: pieces by Antônio Carlos Jobim, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, and a surprise punk classic.

Larry will play Art Resnick’s piano. Larry said: “I attended many of his shows. I asked Art to be my jazz piano and theory teacher when I was in music school at the University of Minnesota in the 1970s. I was unhappy with the minimal jazz curriculum at the U. Art filled the void. Thanks for Gail for sharing Art and his piano.”

Saturday, April 20, 7:00-8:30 p.m., Larry McDonough, piano and voice, performing “Conversations with Bill Evans” at Martuni's, 4 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA 94103. 

Larry McDonough returns to Martuni's with the recent release of "Kind of Bill on the Palace Grounds," a new live recording covering the career of Bill Evans. Evans performed on the Miles Davis album "Kind of Blue" in 1959, the best-selling jazz album ever. His trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian introduced simultaneous improvisation and is regarded as a seminal modern jazz trio. He received 31 Grammy nominations and seven awards, and was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame.
