Solstice, Festivus, and Christmas: 12.19 – 12.25
The Winter Solstice, when we have the shortest amount of daylight is Friday, while Festivus, the made-up holiday from Seinfeld, is Sunday. Christmas, with its message of hope and good will to mankind, is Tuesday. So… there are gigs celebrating each this week, as well as gigs from area musicians who are home for the holidays. This gives you an opportunity to bring guests to some great gigs, or to take some time for yourself in this super-busy season. After all, Music Lifts Your Spirit!

Sunday, Dec 23
Festivus & Other Twisted Holidays @ The Black Dog, Saint Paul. 7pm (Tip Jar) Pianist Larry McDonough and his quartet host a Festivus for the Rest of Us. Expect an Airing of Grievances, along with music for Festivus Miracle and Feats of Strength, as well as McDonough’s odd takes on holiday music

Lowertown’s Black Dog Cafe celebrates 20 years with big bash, food and drink specials

Lowertown’s dining scene has been hopping the last few years. Yet before there was a Market House Collaborative, a Handsome Hog or a Bulldog, there was Black Dog Cafe.

This month, the restaurant and wine bar with live music celebrates its 20th anniversary with parties, games, food and drink specials, and giveaways.

While you’re there, check out the eatery’s tribute to St. Paul. The Saint Paul Sandwich is a combination, naturally, of egg foo young, pickles and bread. So how does one come up with such an eclectic combo?

“While the true origins of the sandwich, or indeed whether one has ever been consumed within the city limits, is debatable, that such an homage is due cannot be disputed,” according to a news release from Black Dog Cafe. “We took some liberty with this delicacy, little-known outside of St. Louis, Mo., to make it our own. … We hope you will agree that it is a truly strange and delicious sandwich, a worthy namesake for the city of St. Paul.”

Black Dog Cafe’s 20th birthday party kicks off today. Highlights throughout the month include the following:

Through Dec. 28: 20 percent off bottles of wine
Dec. 12:  Lowertown Variety Show featuring short acts of comedy, dance, music, magic and amazement (continuing once monthly), 7:30 p.m.
   Dec. 21: A Solstice Candlelight Dinner featuring a four-course menu, 6-9 p.m.
Dec. 23:  “Festivus” with music by Larry McDonough Trio and a traditional Festivus dinner of meatloaf on a bed of lettuce; with 20 percent of sales donated to “The Human Fund”
Dec. 28: Birthday Bash with food and drink specials, free birthday cake, giveaways and more.
