The score mixes lyrics from several sources. The first verse is from “I'll Overcome Someday,” published in 1901 by Charles Albert Tindley, who was a minister at Bainbridge St. Methodist Church in Philadelphia and also a Gospel music composer. The song became a favorite at black churches throughout the American south, often sung as “I Will Overcome.” The composers of “We Shall Overcome” based their lyrics on those of Tindley. The second verse is in Latin, from “O Sanctissima,” a Roman Catholic hymn in Latin to the Blessed Virgin Mary, first published in 1792, on which the melody for “We Shall Overcome” is based. The last verse is a mix of phrases from “We Shall Overcome” derived from “I'll Overcome Someday,” with the coda containing a line mixed from all three sources.
