Jazz: Larry McDonough Sextet plays Born to Be Kind of Blue
Wednesday: St. Paul-based pianist-vocalist-composer Larry McDonough and his sextet will pay tribute to the music of jazz icons Miles Davis and Chet Baker. McDonough learned to sing in the unique style of the late Baker, developing a well-received tribute show that he and his combo have presented several times. Wednesday’s show will also include music from Miles Davis’ landmark 1959 album “Kind of Blue.” The band includes tenor saxophonist Richard Terrill, trumpeter Steve Kenny, bassist Greg Stinson and drummer Dean White. 7 p.m.; Dakota Jazz Club and Restaurant, 1010 Nicollet Ave., Mpls.; $10; 612-332-5299 or dakotacooks.com.

Rhythm and Grooves: Music That Moves the Body and Soul
Summer Begins

Larry McDonough: Born To Be Kind of Blue @ The Dakota, Minneapolis. 7pm ($10) Pianist McDonough has been doing shows about trumpeters Chet Baker and Miles Davis of late. Hollywood recently released films about both trumpeters, so it seems the next step for McDonough is to combine both shows. McDonough’s voice has the same “cool” quality as Baker, so he’s got that covered, and he’s brought in the talented Steve Kenny on trumpet. Other members of the group include Paul Peterson, tenor; Doug Haining, alto; Jim Bierna, bass; and Dean White, drums. Here’s McDonough doing a standard.
