Steve Hirsh is a drummer
and a community organizer.
Those two pillars have been
present in his life for the
entire 50 years (so far) of
his stay on the planet. How
they manifest in his life is
constantly evolving. In recent
years, he has been raising
children (two), working as
the Executive Director of
Minnesota's Center for Reducing Rural Violence, and playing drums in various jazz groups, including his own. Since returning in 2001 from a 20 year hiatus from performing, he has helped establish an audience for jazz music in Bemidji. In 2005, he received an Individual Artist Grant from the Region 2 Arts Board, which supported the recording of Steve Hirsh & Black Ice. He has recently begun collaborating with poet/performer J Otis Powell, adding his personal take on the Afro-American musical tradition to the poet's bebop cadences.
