Thursday, June 29, Larry McDonough

A big hit at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival last week and top pick of the Pioneer Press, the Larry McDonough Quintet reprises its AcoustElectric show at Day Block Brewing. This show pairs the music of Kind of Blue with Return to Forever, the acoustic set followed by the electronic set. But unlike the earlier shows at the Dakota, the Miles Davis trumpet part will transfer to Carol Bergquist on flute--original arrangements indeed. Other acoustic selections will be drawn from Larry's previous shows celebrating Bill Evans, Tony Bennett and Chet Baker.  The electric set pays homage to Return to Forever with some additional hits from Led Zeppelin, Spinal Tap, Sting and Prince.

Larry McDonough Quartet

St. Paul pianist/vocalist/composer Larry McDonough plays two sets with his quartet, one classic acoustic and the second electric fusion. First up is a performance of Miles Davis’ legendary 1959 album “Kind of Blue” — with a twist. Carol Bergquist performs Davis’ role, but on flute rather than trumpet. The acoustic set also includes selections from Chet Baker, Tony Bennett and Bill Evans. After plugging in, McDonough and company tackle the music of Chick Corea and Return to Forever followed by arrangements of Spinal Tap, Sting, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin and Prince songs. (8 p.m. Friday; World of Beer)
